The United States rejected, on Monday (5), accusations that they were promoting a war against Venezuela or its people. The position was presented by the US ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, during a UN Security Council meeting convened to discuss the Venezuelan crisis after the capture of Nicolás Maduro.
In his speech, the diplomat sought to differentiate the action conducted by the United States from a conventional military operation, emphasizing that, according to Washington, it is a law enforcement initiative.
“There is no war against Venezuela or its people. We are not occupying a country. This was a law enforcement operation,” Waltz stated, referring to the incursion in which Maduro was kidnapped. The ambassador also stated that the legal process will follow legal procedures in the United States. “The overwhelming evidence of his crimes will be presented openly in judicial proceedings in US courts,” he said.
When mentioning the actions of US President Donald Trump, Waltz argued that the US government tried to exhaust diplomatic channels before acting. “I want to reiterate that President Trump gave diplomacy a chance. He offered multiple options to Maduro. He tried to de-escalate. Maduro refused to accept them,” he stated.
The ambassador added that the United States intends to maintain its position regarding Venezuela. According to Waltz, the country will not back down from its actions to “protect Americans from the plague of narcoterrorism,” and stated that Washington “seeks peace, freedom, and justice for the great people of Venezuela”.
The American demonstration occurs amid strong criticism from other Security Council members, such as Russia and China, who described the US action as illegal and a violation of international law, deepening the diplomatic impasse surrounding the Venezuelan crisis.
