Directed by Walter Salles, the Brazilian film “I Am Still Here” has been nominated for the Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language Film. Actress Fernanda Torres was also nominated for Best Actress alongside Tilda Swinton, Kate Winslet, Angelina Jolie, and Nicole Kidman.
“I Am Still Here” tells the story of the Paiva family – mother Eunice and her five children – after the disappearance of Eunice’s husband, Congressman Rubens Paiva, who was arrested, tortured, and killed by the military dictatorship.
The film was chosen by the Brazilian Academy of Cinema to represent Brazil in the race for the 2025 Oscar. It was warmly received by the audience and won awards at various international festivals, including Best Screenplay at the Venice Film Festival.
The film is based on the biographical book by journalist Marcelo Rubens Paiva, Eunice and Rubens Paiva’s youngest son. Released in 2015, the book tells the story of his mother, a symbol of the fight against the dictatorship, who lived until 2018 and died at the age of 86 from Alzheimer’s.
Eunice Paiva raised her five children and became a human rights and indigenous lawyer after her husband’s arrest and disappearance in 1971 during the dictatorship in Rio de Janeiro.
