Supporters of Bolsonaro Hold Rally in São Paulo

Supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro gathered on Sunday afternoon (February 25) in São Paulo. Wearing yellow t-shirts and carrying flags of Brazil and Israel, they arrived at the rally on buses with license plates from outside the city and from other states.

The former president — who has been barred by the Superior Electoral Court from running for public office until 2030 for abuse of economic power — criticized the decisions of the Supreme Federal Court and called for amnesty for those convicted for the events of January 8, whom he referred to as “allies.”

Bolsonaro is under investigation by the Federal Police and the Supreme Federal Court for the attack launched on January 8, 2023, against the headquarters of the Three Powers in Brasília, with the aim of abolishing the Democratic Rule of Law and staging a coup.

In his speech, Bolsonaro acknowledged the existence of a draft that anticipated a state of siege, the imprisonment of parliamentarians and Supreme Federal Court ministers, and supported a supposed coup. However, he criticized the criminal investigations into the document.

Copies of this document were found by the police at the home of Bolsonaro’s former Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres, and at the headquarters of the Liberal Party (PL) in Brasília, to which the former president is affiliated. The draft was also mentioned in the plea bargain agreement of Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid, who served as Bolsonaro’s aide-de-camp.

Other details are being investigated, such as a video of a meeting held at the Palácio da Alvorada in July 2022. At that time, direct advisors of the former president and a group of military personnel suggested alternatives to attack the electronic voting system and the 2022 presidential election.
