The Hot and Crystal Clear Waters of Caldas Novas

Caldas Novas is located in a region that hosts one of the largest hydrothermal parks in the world. The water springs in the area, with temperatures ranging from 36 to 70 degrees Celsius, are the main reason for the city’s popularity.

Hot and crystal clear waters emerge at approximately 60°C. The local thermal waters are considered therapeutic, attracting around one million visitors each year.

Caldas Novas has the highest number of hotels in the Central-West region, many of which have their own water parks. However, there are also thermal parks in the area open to the public. An interesting fact: the local hot waters come from local rain. The water is absorbed through cracks in the rocks and reaches depths of over a thousand meters, where it is heated and returns to the surface through a system of fractures (deep fissures in the rocks).

Lago Corumbá, which supplies the Corumbá I hydroelectric plant, is another interesting local attraction, covering an area of 65 km². Visitors usually enjoy it on motorboats, sailboats, and jet skis, passing by waterfalls and local bars along the shores. Sport fishing is another popular activity available to the public, and there are even periodic competitions.

For hikers, there are two trails (Cascatinha and Paredão) in the Serra de Caldas Novas State Park that lead to local waterfalls and viewpoints where one can see the beauty of the fauna and flora of the Cerrado biome (also known as the Brazilian savanna) at an altitude of 1,043 m. The trails should be guided by local guides and last between one and a half to two and a half hours.

While in the region, it is worth trying the local delights and dishes, such as the baked fish on a tile, one of the most popular dishes in the area. After being cleaned, the fish is well-seasoned, placed on a tile, and cooked in a clay oven. The pequi (pequi nut), a fruit typical of the Cerrado, is also widely used in local cuisine.

Visitors should also take time to visit the municipality of Rio Quente, located just 30 km from the city of Caldas Novas. It is home to the longest hot water river on the planet, extending 12 km, as well as one of the largest water parks in the country.
