World’s First Non-Fungible Territory Declared by Indigenous Communities in Brazil

The World’s First Non-Fungible Territory was officially declared by indigenous peoples in Brazil in coalition with Nemus, a Web3 company that sells Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) to protect the Amazon Rainforest. Digital NFTs are unique, encoded on the blockchain, and irreplaceable. Each one is a unique asset — just like the Amazon.

Around the world, indigenous peoples are guardians of the Earth, responsible for protecting 80% of the planet’s biodiversity. With NFTs recently exploding in popularity due to exorbitant gains and celebrity endorsements, the guardians of Brazil’s lands decided to highlight a purposeful utility for NFTs — saving the Amazon. This event is captured in the short film, Non-Fungible Territory.

The sales of Nemus’s NFTs are being used to protect the Non-Fungible Territory from deforestation that has devastated much of the Amazon, address the $300 billion funding gap for climate action against deforestation, create sustainable jobs, and expand economic activities for local people.

With the goal of investing one billion dollars in the region, Nemus is already generating a positive impact. They recently released over $100,000 from their treasury to fund the purchase of equipment that develops sustainable harvesting methods for Brazil nuts and reinforces land security.

“If we want to save the Amazon, we need to work with the people who live here. Creating businesses in the middle of the jungle, with difficult access, no power source, and a population with limited education and skills is a huge challenge. But it is possible, and we have experience. It requires a lot of hard work and presence on the ground, but we can generate incredible results that change lives in local communities,” says Flavio de Meira Penna, CEO of Nemus.

As local communities learn more about the utility of NFTs like those from Nemus, they are adopting the technology as a way to enhance their land management. By utilizing Web3 to raise awareness about the needs of the Amazon and offer financial alternatives to its indigenous guardians, they unite the world around an important cause. “Buy an NFT to save the NFT.”
