A New York art gallery founded by two Brazilians has crossed the Atlantic and brought to Egypt the work of some of the excellent artists it represents.
The Saphira & Ventura Gallery, founded by Brazilians Alcinda Saphira and Louis Ventura over a decade ago in New York, is participating this week in the 1st edition of the “Empower Her Art Forum,” an international art forum to be held at the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization from May 20 to 24, 2023, showcasing the work of over 100 women from 34 countries.
The event, which is supported by the Ministries of Culture, Social Solidarity, and Environment, along with the National Council for Women and the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Council, as well as various local and international organizations, aims to raise awareness about the eradication of violence against women and empower them through art.
Empowering women through art is one of the UN’s sustainable development goals and a pillar of the national strategy for empowering Egyptian women, which aims to eliminate all forms of violence against women and promote social protection.
Brazilian Curatorship
After a successful participation in the International Contemporary Art Forum For Sustainable Development in 2022, also held in Egypt, the Saphira & Ventura Gallery was invited by one of the organizing institutions of the forum, Artoday, to return, this time with the work solely of female artists.
Alcinda Saphira, the curator, gathered works from national and international artists, highlighting a multicultural perspective. They include New York-based artists Bari Bing, Barbara Shelly, Maria T. Ason, Erika Fujyama, Irene Van Celestine, and Meagan J. Meehan. Baltimore artist Barbara Tyler Ahlfield; Mali Perry from Atlanta; and Anna Hopfensberger from Munich. The gallery’s highlight is a sculpture by French master Camille Claudel, known for her remarkable work with bronze and marble.
The Saphira & Ventura Gallery represents artists from around the world and constantly participates in national and international art exhibitions, forums, and fairs. Together with the New York International Contemporary Art Society, a nonprofit organization created by the same founders, its mission is to collect, preserve, and promote contemporary art forms of multiple languages.
