Senior Tourism Gains Momentum in Brazil – The Brasilians

With more free time, energy, and decision-making power, people over 60 are driving the sector and inspiring new itineraries. Initiatives from the Ministry of Tourism promote the comfort and safety of these visitors.

The increase in life expectancy and improvements in the quality of life have transformed the profile of senior tourists. Increasingly active, independent, and eager to explore new destinations, travelers over 60 are gaining a foothold in the market and establishing themselves as one of the sector’s most important audiences, making senior tourism a rising global trend.

Extra free time and a desire to enjoy new experiences lead these tourists to seek itineraries that combine culture, leisure, and wellness. In response, travel companies and agencies are investing in packages designed specifically for this age group, offering adapted infrastructure, light schedules, accessible accommodations, and specialized guides. Careful attention to details, such as short tours, rest stops, and comfortable transportation, ensures safe and enjoyable outings.

Among the most popular destinations for senior travelers are the historic cities of Minas Gerais, such as Ouro Preto and Tiradentes, which offer abundant cultural attractions and colonial charm; the thermal waters of Caldas Novas (GO), ideal for relaxation; and the beaches along the coasts of Bahia and Santa Catarina.

To raise awareness among tourism service providers and ensure proper reception for seniors, the Ministry of Tourism provides the guidebook “Tips for Serving Elderly Tourists Well.” The material offers practical guidance on welcoming visitors with dignity, respect, and empathy.

The publication underscores the importance of humane treatment and valuing travelers’ experiences, while highlighting the need for safe and accessible infrastructure, including non-slip floors, ramps, support bars in leisure areas, and signage in transportation, hotels, and restaurants.

The Ministry of Tourism also works to broaden access for visitors over 60 through the “Get to Know Brazil: Flying” program. Developed in partnership with airlines, the initiative encourages domestic tourism with affordable, safe, and comfortable flights, especially off-peak—a significant benefit for seniors, who prefer quieter, less crowded destinations.
