Just over a month before the start of the Republican primaries for the 2024 general elections, the party’s leading candidate, former President Donald J. Trump, has once again employed anti-immigrant rhetoric, described by many as ‘xenophobic,’ ‘racist,’ and ‘Nazi,’ during his election campaign.
During rallies in Nevada and New Hampshire last weekend, Trump stated that undocumented immigrants were “poisoning the blood of our country,” repeating language that has previously been labeled xenophobic and Nazi.
He added that immigrants were coming to the U.S. from Asia and Africa, as well as South America. “From all over the world they are coming to our country.”
Trump promised to crack down on illegal immigration and once again restrict legal immigration if elected to a second four-year term as President.
Demonstrating confidence, his language is now sharper than during the 2016 and 2020 campaigns.
Trump has repeatedly used inflammatory language to describe the problem at the border and criticize Biden’s immigration policies. Following the surprise attack on October 7 by Hamas in southern Israel, Trump vowed that if elected, he would prevent the entry of refugees from Gaza into the U.S. and initiate “ideological screening” of all immigrants, barring those who sympathize with Hamas and Muslim extremists.
A White House spokesperson stated that Trump’s comments over the weekend were “the opposite of everything we stand for as Americans.”
“Echoing the grotesque rhetoric of fascists and violent white supremacists and threatening to oppress those who disagree with the government are dangerous attacks on the dignity and rights of all Americans, on our democracy, and on public safety,” said White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates in a statement.
