Traveling with Pets to Brazil – The Brasilians

Traveling with Pets to Brazil

If you wish to travel to Brazil with your pet (dogs and/or cats), Brazilian law requires the following procedures to be completed before boarding:

1. You must obtain the following from a licensed veterinarian residing in your jurisdiction: (a) original International Zoosanitary Certificate – IZC, stating that the animal is in good health; (b) that the animal was examined within 10 days of the departure date and no contagious disease was verified in the area of origin, and (c) that the U.S. is free of rabies.
If the veterinarian does not certify that the U.S. is free of rabies, a rabies vaccination certificate must also be issued. The first rabies vaccination must be done at least 30 days before the expected arrival date of the animal in Brazil. Both certificates can be issued by the veterinarian on a single document, and must be duly stamped and signed, and contain the veterinarian’s name and license number;

It is recommended that all documents be accompanied by a translation into Portuguese.

2. Both certificates (IZC and the rabies vaccination certificate) must be endorsed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture – USDA, within 10 days of the departure date. In the link below you will find the USDA office responsible for your state: www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel
Other Animals

The admission of other types of animals is subject to prior licensing from MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil). For more information, please write to ctqa@agricultura.gov.br.

Once you have the proper authorization from MAPA to bring your pet to Brazil, all documents (including the IZC and the rabies vaccination certificate, both endorsed by the USDA) must be sent or taken to the Consulate General of Brazil for legalization. There is a fee of $20.00 per document, payable only by USPS money order.
Birds

Please note that the admission of birds is temporarily suspended. However, there are several restrictions on the admission of birds into Brazil, and the necessary authorizations must be obtained from IBAMA, the Brazilian authority for the protection of wildlife, and from MAPA (Ministry of Agriculture of Brazil). For more information, please write to ctqa@agricultura.gov.br.
