Snowstorm Cancels Over a Thousand Flights and Delays Hundreds More in the U.S.

More than a thousand flights were canceled and hundreds of others were delayed in the United States on Monday (6) after a winter storm, with heavy snow and ice, hit much of the country.

A total of 1,339 flights were canceled, and 606 flights were delayed, by 6:45 AM ET, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., canceled 234 flights, most of them between airports, constituting 58% of all scheduled flights there, according to the data.

As the storm moved toward the mid-Atlantic region on Monday, more than a dozen states, from Kansas and Missouri to New Jersey, were under winter storm alerts.

It could be the largest snowstorm in at least a decade in the region, said the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings in parts of Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.

Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a state of emergency due to snow until at least the end of the day on Tuesday (7), while Maryland Governor Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and warned residents to avoid traveling.

15 to 30 cm of snow was expected from Ohio to D.C. by Monday morning (5).

More than 300,000 people were without power as of 8 AM ET on Monday in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, according to Poweroutage.us.
