Under the command of attacking midfielder Cole Palmer, Chelsea (England) delivered a gala performance to defeat PSG (France) 3-0 on this Sunday afternoon (13) at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, securing the title of the first edition of the FIFA Club World Cup that featured 32 teams.
Taking into account all formats of the Club World Cup, Chelsea added its second title in history this Sunday, after winning the 2021 edition, which featured seven teams.
Palmer’s Brilliance
Contrary to predictions of wide dominance by PSG (current Champions League title holders and who, up to then, had the most impressive performances in the competition), the first half was marked by a perfect performance from Chelsea, highlighted by attacking midfielder Palmer, who scored two goals and provided an assist for another. The English team’s number 10 began deciding the match at the 21st minute of the first half, when he received a pass from full-back Malo Gusto and curled a shot to open the scoring.
Eight minutes later, Palmer shone again to extend Chelsea’s lead. The English team’s number 10 led a counter-attack down the left flank, shook off the marker with a body feint, and shot with precision once more to beat goalkeeper Donnarumma again.
With the deficit on the scoreboard, the French team pushed up their lines and began offering more spaces to the opponents. That’s how Chelsea got the third. Palmer launched another counter-attack at the 42nd minute and delivered a deep pass to Brazilian João Pedro, who, inside the box, simply chipped it over for a stunning goal.
In the second half, the English team showed maturity and composure to see out the time and secure the victory and the FIFA Club World Cup title.
