Oral and Dental Health – The Brasilians

In an interview with The Brasilians, Brazilian dentist Dr. Carolina Hakopian (photo below), graduated from the University of São Paulo and the University of Rochester in New York State, discusses the importance of oral and dental health in adults and children.
The Brasilians: What is the importance of the family dentist?
Carolina Hakopian: The family dentist takes care of the oral health of all age groups. By attending to the family unit, we can individualize the dental care for each member.
TB: When you say you attend to all age groups, do you also see babies? At what age should the first visit to the dentist occur?
CH: Yes, we see babies. The first appointment should happen as soon as the first tooth erupts, around six months of age. During this visit, parents receive not only guidance for dental care but also a calendar for follow-up visits.
TB: Is the frequency of follow-ups for babies and children individualized? For adults as well?
CH: Correct. This calendar is suggested by the dentist based on the risk for diseases, and from there, he determines the frequency of cleanings, exams, and X-rays.
TB: And fluoride? Do we need to add fluoride supplements to the water?
CH: The drinking water in New York State is fluoridated. It is not necessary to add fluoride to drinking water. Fluoride is very important for dental health, and I recommend that residents of other states consult their doctors or dentists to see if they need to obtain a fluoride supplement.
TB: In a few words, what is your consultation like?
CH: In my consultation, I assess not only the presence of cavities but also the health of the gums, facial bones, maxillofacial growth, tooth positioning, cancer prevention, and signs of bruxism.
TB: What is bruxism?

CH: Bruxism is the technical term for “grinding teeth.” Very common, it also affects children, and if left untreated, it can cause severe damage to the teeth, including dental fractures. Unfortunately, during the pandemic, there was a noted increase in bruxism, possibly due to higher anxiety levels in the population.
TB: How is a dental fracture treated?
CH: A dental fracture causes a lot of pain and discomfort for the patient and needs to be treated as soon as possible. Depending on the type of fracture, different treatments are recommended, such as crowns, root canal treatment, or implants. In our clinic, we offer same-day emergency consultations and even remote consultations.
TB: Does your clinic perform implants? What are implants?
CH: An implant is a modern treatment to replace teeth that have been lost for one reason or another. Yes, we perform implants in our clinic.
TB: Do you provide all types of treatment in your clinic?
CH: We have a network of specialists in all areas to offer complete treatments. For example, if a patient needs a maxillofacial operation, they will be referred to a specialist in that area.
TB: Some people are afraid of the dentist because dental treatment can hurt. Is that true?
CH: Nowadays, dentists have a variety of options to prevent pain or even discomfort during treatment. Nitrous oxide sedation via inhalation or anxiolytic pills to calm patients who have fears or anxieties, in addition to local anesthesia.
TB: And for cosmetic or aesthetic purposes, are there options?
CH: Yes, I provide treatments such as whitening, veneers, and aesthetic aligners. Whitening can be done with laser or trays. Veneers are porcelain laminates. Aesthetic aligners improve the positioning of the teeth.
TB: And cigarettes, do they affect the teeth?
CH: Any product containing nicotine has a negative effect not only on the teeth but on the mouth in general, affecting gums, bones, oral mucosa, decreasing saliva production, and increasing the risk of oral cancer, among other problems.
TB: And dental floss? Yes or no?
CH: Yes. Dental floss is a fundamental step in daily oral hygiene. It should be used twice a day and should become a habit.
TB: And Covid? Do you see unvaccinated people against Covid?
CH: We advise everyone to get vaccinated. At this moment, the state of New York does not require the presentation of a Covid vaccination card.
