The cities of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói have submitted a joint bid to host the 2031 Pan American Games. The project was delivered by the mayors of Rio, Eduardo Paes, and elected Niterói mayor Rodrigo Neves to Panam Sports, the organization responsible for the Games. The decision will be made in 2025 at the entity’s general assembly.
“Our bid is not an adventure. We are talking about the union of two of the most important cities in Brazil. We have full confidence in our success and will demonstrate our joint capacity to host major events, as we have already done with the 2007 Pan, the 2014 World Cup, as well as the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Eduardo Paes.
Rio and Niterói also announced that they will officially present the bid letter to the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) next week.
“We had a very productive meeting with leaders from the Brazilian Olympic Committee and Panam Sports (Pan-American Sports Organization). Next week, we will formalize the letter of intent. It will be very good for Brazil, for sports, and for the development of our cities and the State of Rio,” said Neves.
Upon receiving the letter, the COB will be responsible for formulating the procedure to choose the Brazilian representative in the competition. Each country can submit only one bid. The city of São Paulo has also officially expressed its intention to host the continental event in 2031. The COB will have to make a choice between the two bids by January 31, 2025.
