If you have a ticket booked to Rio de Janeiro this New Year’s Eve, you’ll want to read this news. If you still don’t know where to go for the long holiday this year, here’s a good tip.
The mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes (PSD), announced the program for the city’s 2025 New Year’s Eve celebration. The city will host shows by Caetano Veloso and Maria Bethânia, Ivete Sangalo – performing for the first time at the Rio party, Anitta, Xand Avião, and the champion of the 2024 carnival, the Unidos de Viradouro school.
In total, there will be 13 stages spread throughout the city. However, it is expected that only Copacabana, the main celebration location, will receive up to two million people on the night of December 31, 2024.
According to the mayor, this year’s event will feature the largest number of attractions in the history of Rio’s New Year celebrations, with 20 more attractions yet to be announced. “What we want is to welcome visitors, so we are inviting everyone to spread out across the city’s New Year’s Eve parties,” he said in an interview.
The president of the Municipal Tourism Company of Rio (RioTur), Patrick Côrrea, emphasized that the New Year’s Eve celebration will not only take place in Copacabana but in various locations across the capital. “Last year, several stages around the city attracted five million people celebrating the New Year in Rio, so we want to surpass that number,” he pointed out.
Fireworks
In 2025, ten barges will be distributed for free along Copacabana beach for the fireworks display – lasting 12 minutes – as the clock strikes midnight from December 31 to January 1. In 2024, there were 12 stages and 12 barges spread across the capital, gathering 2.5 million people along the Copacabana waterfront. According to the Rio city hall, the economic transfer was R$ 3 billion during the last New Year’s Eve.
“We want hotels full, the bar and restaurant sector thriving, and commerce booming. Tourism is one of Rio’s most important activities, the people who come to visit [the city], this entertainment industry,” stated Mayor Eduardo Paes.
“Rio is a city with many offerings, many alternatives, so we always want to encourage and create reasons for people to come to Rio de Janeiro, not just for its natural beauty, tourist spots, and historical sites. We always want great events and large gatherings happening here,” concluded the mayor.
