Yane Marques – The Brasilians

The athlete was born in the city of Afogados da Ingazeira, in Pernambuco, on January 7, 1984. From a young age, she showed her interest in sports. She began her sports career as a swimmer at the Clube Náutico Capibaribe in Recife, where she moved at the age of eleven.

Yane discovered her passion for modern pentathlon, a sport that includes swimming, fencing, equestrian, target shooting, and running, and started her training in October 2003. In her first competition, she won the National Championship in Porto Alegre in 2004.

In 2007, Yane won gold at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, a title that secured her participation in the Beijing Olympics in 2008, where she finished in 18th place.

In 2009, Yane was integrated into the Brazilian Army, with the goal of forming a team for the Military World Games, which took place in 2011 in Rio de Janeiro, where she won three medals: gold in the team event, silver individually, and bronze in the mixed relay. By the end of that same year, she won her seventh consecutive Brazil Olympic Award in Modern Pentathlon, having been champion since 2005. Still in 2011, she earned a silver medal at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Yane Marques has numerous titles in her career, including medals from the South American Championships from 2004 to 2009 and 2012, and medals from the Pan American Championships in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2014. In 2011, she reached third place in the world ranking of modern pentathlon.

In 2012, she won a bronze medal at the London Olympics, becoming the first Latin American athlete to win a medal in modern pentathlon in Olympic history. After the games, she became number 2 in the

world in the ranking of the International Modern Pentathlon Union.

In 2013, Yane Marques won a gold medal at the Kremlin Cup in Russia, a silver medal at the World Championship in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and a bronze at the Champion of Champions tournament in Doha, Qatar, finishing the year in 4th place in the world ranking.

In 2014, she won a gold medal at the South American Games in Chile and at the Pan American Championship in Mexico City. In September of that same year, she placed 14th at the World Championship in Warsaw, Poland. Yane ended the year in 10th place in the world ranking. At the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016, Yane finished in 23rd place in modern pentathlon.

In 2017, Yane Marques took over as the Executive Secretary of Sports for the city of Recife, under the administration of Mayor Geraldo Júlio.
