A project for a bionic hand for a class led a group of high school girls in Wyoming to develop an app that facilitates the distribution of ready meals to elderly people in the community.
In this process, the students won the Wyoming Congressional App Challenge, an award considered prestigious for Computer Science students.
Teaghen Sweckard needed to learn to code in order to control the bionic hand she was building. “Using online resources, I saw that there were no opportunities for others to learn to code at our school,” she said.
So she created a club, Girls Who Code, using the national model of the nonprofit organization.
Teaghen, her sister, and three other friends (photo) presented ideas, and they all agreed on developing an app aimed at facilitating food distribution in their town for a national program called Meals on Wheels.
“The idea was to simplify the process involving acquiring customer information, mapping the route, and using Google Maps,” explained Teaghen.
Today, the club, renamed Coding Club, includes male and female students, with about 20 members.
