The Best Surfing Destinations in Brazil – The Brasilians

The Best Surfing Destinations in Brazil

Summer brings life to beaches all over Brazil with locals and tourists seeking to cool off and enjoy the beauty of the coastline. For surfing enthusiasts, it is also a favorable time for the sport. However, those who think that sand, sea, and waves only go together with sunny days of the hottest season are mistaken.

In the following autumn/winter seasons (from April to August), especially in the South and Southeast, the increased frequency of swells creates ideal conditions for surfing, a sport that allows one to enjoy the natural charms of the country and also provides a spectacle for those who remain on solid ground.

The Tourism News Agency lists some destinations that delight surfers and admirers across Brazil.

The states in the Southeast region host some of the most popular surfing beaches in the country. In Rio de Janeiro, notable spots include Arpoador (one of the birthplaces of the sport in Brazil), São Conrado, Barra da Tijuca, and Prainha. Itacoatiara, in Niterói, with its strong swells, attracts more experienced surfers, as does Itaúna, in Saquarema, in the Lakes Region of Rio de Janeiro. This year, Itaúna will also host the Brazilian stage of the professional surfing world circuit.

São Paulo, in turn, has Ubatuba, São Sebastião, and Guarujá as its main surfing spots, featuring icons such as Itamambuca, Tombo, and Maresias. Espírito Santo offers points like Jacaraípe, Carapebus, Barra do Sahy, and Regência, catering to various skill levels.

The coastline of Santa Catarina, another famous location for revealing renowned surfers and hosting international events, boasts beaches with excellent conditions. Among them are Joaquina, Mole, and Brava in Florianópolis, as well as Guarda do Embaú (in the municipality of Palhoça), Vila and do Rosa (Imbituba), and Ferrugem and Silveira (Garopaba). Depending on the waves, some reaching up to four meters in height, many of these require significant practice from the surfer.

In Paraná, the main spot is Matinhos, used by competitors to perfect their maneuvers. The Ilha do Mel, in the same state, also offers good alternatives, such as the beaches of Paralelas, de Fora, and Grande. Meanwhile, Rio Grande do Sul attracts surfers to the region of Torres, with beaches like Guarita, Cal, and Prainha.

In the Northeast, the ideal surfing season begins in November and continues until March. The region stands out for destinations such as the emblematic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, in Pernambuco.

Known as the ‘Brazilian Hawaii’, the location offers perfect waves on world-famous beaches, such as Cacimba do Padre and Conceição. Other highlights include Itacaré, in Bahia; Praia de Pipa, in Rio Grande do Norte; Baía Formosa, in Paraíba; and Paracuru, in Ceará.
