Far from everything, on the other side of the world, New Zealand is worth every second of the long, very long flight. Divided into two main islands, the country boasts an impressive array of landscapes and attractions for its compact size.
On the North Island, where three-quarters of the population lives, summers are relatively warm and there are perfect beaches (like those on the Coromandel Peninsula) for both surfers and those who just want to bask in the sun. But its main treasures are hidden inland: active volcanoes, geysers, multi-colored lakes, and other unusual geological formations create scenes that seem out of this world (not surprisingly, some of them, like Mount Tongariro, served as a backdrop for the Lord of the Rings trilogy).
In the sparsely populated South Island, a land of icy winters and mild summers, the attractions are the snow-capped peaks, gigantic glaciers, a coastline populated by seals and whales, and some of the most beautiful fjords on the planet – Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound, among others. Add to these natural resources splendid wines, vibrant cities like Auckland and Christchurch, friendly people, and an exemplary infrastructure for sustainable tourism, and you have one of the most complete and alluring destinations on Earth.
What also makes New Zealand so appealing to young people and nature lovers are the excellent options for adventure sports, especially near Queenstown. The national passion is rugby and its team, the mighty All Blacks. The blend of this British sport with its Maori war cry, the haka, is the perfect image of a vigorous country that respects its native origins and seeks common progress.
New Zealand is ideal for road trips. The roads are in good condition and, although the “kiwis,” as the locals are called, drive on the left side, the cars are automatic and this does not pose a problem, as long as the driver has a bit of skill.
The train is a great option for getting around the country – the scenic trains traverse beautiful regions. Since the distances are vast, often the plane is the best means of transport, especially for those with little time.
Another way to explore the country is through backpacker buses. They stop at all points of interest and passengers can get on or off at any stop. The most famous service is Kiwi Experience, but it is not recommended for those seeking tranquility. Naked is an economical transport company (in vans and buses).
Divide this time with three nights in Auckland, one in Rotorua, and the rest enjoying the attractions of Milford Sound and Queenstown. Some adventurous souls like to make their journey in motor homes, taking advantage of the excellent infrastructure of roads and services. In the North Island, a classic ten-day loop includes Waitomo Cave, Coromandel Peninsula, Taupo, Napier, and Wellington. In the South Island, some favorite destinations are Mount Cook, the highest point in the country, Fox Glacier, Abel Tasman National Park, and the vineyards in the Nelson region, which take about a week.
