Vegas, take U.S. Highway 95 South and spend the night in Tonopah, known for having one of the darkest night skies in the U.S. Visit the International Car Forest in Goldfield, then travel to Rhyolite, which is just outside the town of Beatty. For an extraterrestrial journey, take a detour on State Route 375 and visit the Little A’Le’Inn, where all creatures are welcome.
The hospitality of the Old West reigns in Elko, home to the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering and J.M. Capriola Co., the original manufacturer of Garcia Bits and Spurs and other fine Old West products. Visit the California Trail Interpretive Center to
learn about the hardships faced by pioneers. Take a free tour of a local gold mine, or a scenic trip to Lamoille Canyon, where you can fish, hike, and bike. Or, be bold and go heli-skiing in the Ruby Mountains. For more Old West nostalgia, don’t forget to visit Virginia City, known as the home of the Comstock Lode and one of the largest mining fields west of Denver. Today, its safe wooden sidewalks are filled with visitors
coming to experience the real-life bonanza.
Visit the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area for hiking, biking, and climbing. There are amazing sandstone formations in Valley of Fire State Park, zip lines in Boulder City, and golf courses that operate year-round throughout the state. Drive to Laughlin, in the Colorado River Valley, for a variety of outdoor activities.
After visiting Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in the nation, head to Carson City, a border town surrounded by Sierra Nevada. Those who love the outdoors and mountain biking can enjoy the challenging trails created by rivers dating back to 1850. Visit the Stewart Indian School to learn about Native Americans and indigenous traditions. Then, head to Reno for daytime rafting on the Truckee River. Explore the bold city of Las Vegas with a walk along The Strip, seeing historic casinos, massive hotels, bright signage, and dancing fountains before diving into the cityscape.
