Long before themes and expressions like youth protagonism and female empowerment gained relevance in the media and the world, Mônica was already an example of the strength and leadership that girls can have. For over five decades, her gang has helped convey values such as friendship, justice, respect for diversity, among others.
Mônica, a character from Mauricio de Sousa’s comics, was appointed UNICEF ambassador in Brazil on November 6, 2007, but the alliance between Mauricio de Sousa Produções and the United Nations Fund has a long history. In 1993, the Turma da Mônica, with the agency’s support, presented the Statute of the Child and Adolescent in a fun way, through comics, to make the law easier for children to understand. Since April 2005, Mônica and other characters from Maurício de Sousa’s comics have supported the dissemination of UNICEF messages for children in their magazines. Among the topics addressed are the right to education, breastfeeding, inclusion of children with disabilities, combating racism, and the importance of sports practice. As a UNICEF ambassador, Mônica and her creator, Mauricio de Sousa, have participated in national and global UNICEF campaigns, such as “I make a better world for children”, “United for children and adolescents”, “Little Stories”, among others.Source: www.nacoesunidas.org
