The 1968 Beetle that has already crossed seven countries in South America has bolder dreams for 2018: it will cross the ocean. The Fuscamérica Expedition will be with Segundinho – the affectionate nickname of the project’s iconic vehicle – at the World Cup in Russia. According to photographer Nauro Júnior, the mastermind behind the expedition, the idea is to travel about 20,000 kilometers between June and July, covering the behind-the-scenes of the biggest sporting event
on the planet. “We want to show the B side of the Cup, the fans from all corners, the mix of languages, and the behind-the-scenes that international broadcasts do not show,” highlights Nauro. The itinerary foresees the Beetle’s boarding at the Port of Rio Grande in April and disembarkation in Germany, from where it will be sent by land to the city of Moscow. The operation will be carried out by Sagres Agencia Marítimos and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL).
Nauro will be accompanied by co-pilot Caio Passos, who currently lives in the city of Porto, Portugal. Russia is the country with the largest area on the planet, covering more than 1/9 of the land area. But even that didn’t stop the project from being outlined two years ago. “There were many meetings, conversations with friends, companies, contacts with television channels, until we found the ideal travel model,” explains Nauro. After traveling more than 45,000 kilometers in incursions through South America since 2012, he faces the challenge with serenity. “Beetles and football have the same essence; they belong to the people, and that makes our approach to people easier,” he argues.
Collective Project: Even with ongoing negotiations with some
television channels, the Fuscamérica Expedition team decided to roll up their sleeves and put into practice an independent way to make the project viable: crowdfunding. On January 20 – National Beetle Day – Nauro launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise donations for the goal of R$ 40,000. To support the logistics of the trip, the “ground team” plans all the details of the itinerary. The team, formed by Gabriela Mazza, Ígor Islabão, Greice Piche, and Jéssica Barz, is responsible for organizing the routes, liaising with the press, and managing the social media of the Fuscamérica Expedition, which has over 10,000 Facebook followers.
