The United States and Brazil signed the fresh beef trade agreement. The conclusion of the negotiations was finalized in Washington during the IX Agricultural Advisory Committee (CCA) of the two countries.
The expectation is that shipments will begin in 90 days, after the completion of administrative procedures. “This document represents the recognition of Brazil’s sanitary safety quality,” stated the minister. In a statement, the Ministry explained the importance of the agreement and how it serves as a reference, almost like a quality seal for Brazilian beef.
“The conclusion of the negotiation is important for Brazil not only because of the potential purchasing power of that market but also because the US is a reference for other importers of fresh beef,” the text said.
Exports to the US
Brazil already sells processed beef to the US, which totaled $286.8 million last year. With the conclusion of this negotiation regarding fresh and frozen meat, Brazilian slaughterhouses will collectively have a quota of up to 64,800 tons per year.
To surpass this quota, Brazil will also have to outcompete those within the same quota. In return, the United States will be able to sell its protein to Brazilian consumers.
The Itamaraty celebrated the end of the negotiations through a statement. “Access to the North American market opens exceptional prospects for Brazilian exporters and heralds new business opportunities,” it stated.
