USA and Brazil Strengthen Trade Ties – The Brasilians

USA and Brazil Strengthen Trade Ties

Farmers and food producers in the United States are turning their attention to Brazil.

It is expected that by 2018, sales of about $7 million in American agricultural products to Brazil will follow the first trade mission of the U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service to the largest country in South America.

“Brazil has significant untapped market potential for U.S. exporters,” said Mark Slupek, an official with the U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service. “The country’s growing population and rising per capita income, along with the fact that Brazilian consumers have a high regard for U.S. products and brands, make this a market worth exploring for American exporters.”

The top American exports to Brazil in 2016 included ethanol, wheat, prepared foods, and products poised for growth: fresh beef from the United States. The first shipment made by American cattle ranchers arrived in 2017 after a 14-year hiatus. Brazil banned U.S. beef from entering the country in 2003 following the discovery of mad cow disease (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) in four American cows. The World Organization for Animal Health classified the risk of this disease in American cattle as “insignificant” in 2013.

“I found that when individuals and businesses want to start exporting to a particular market, they often don’t know how and where to begin,” Slupek said. “This is where we, at the U.S. Foreign Agricultural Service, come in to help get the job done.”
