Douglas Malharo: The New Voice of MPB – The Brasilians

Douglas Malharo: The New Voice of MPB

In these 24 years of music, DM played at night in many bars, shopping malls, and nightclubs before arriving in Rio de Janeiro. He is definitely a “mineiroca” (MG + RJ). He was born in the city of Barra Mansa but lived in Volta Redonda for almost 20 years, though his most flavorful memories are from Minas Gerais in the quiet town of Santa Rita de Jacutinga, with a population of 6,000, where he would go every weekend in the back seat of his grandfather Humberto Rosa’s Brasília, later hitchhiking, taking the bus, and traveling by car with his family during his teenage years. Always parallel to music, he worked in various fields, such as selling sweets at the neighborhood market, being an office boy at 14 when he started studying guitar, a bank messenger, and later, a guitar teacher by day and playing in bars at night. During the nearly 2 years he lived in the United States, in addition to playing in bars, he worked as a painter, newspaper delivery person, house cleaner, and gardener.

Back in Brazil, he set up a music studio for rehearsals and percussion classes in his free time called “Oficina Percussiva,” where he conducted over 20 workshops with musicians such as Artur Maia, Nelson Faria, Reppolho, André Neiva, Renato Massa, and Claudio Infante. Before pursuing a solo career, he played with bands of various styles such as Baile, Sertanejo de Raiz, Samba, Pagode, and several from the 80s and 90s Pop genre. He was a Record Producer for independent artists from the countryside and also created jingles for numerous radio stations and politicians. After finishing his first degree in music production, he became an artistic director. After these years there and feeling undervalued in many aspects, he felt a strong desire to move forward due to his dissatisfaction with the direction music offered to the public was taking.

He was then invited to be the Municipal Secretary of Culture in Minas Gerais in 2012.

On a beautiful morning already in Rio de Janeiro, taking care of other family businesses, his wife and 20-year-old son noticed his sadness and made a request that became a turning point… return to your art!!!

So here he is, much happier.

Show producer and opener for artists such as: Lulu Santos, Cássia Eller, João Bosco, Guilherme Arantes, Zé Ramalho, and Blitz.

His first CD was released in 2003, “Um pulo sonoro… Além do anonimato,” which was his first solo CD containing 11 original songs with contributions from musicians like: Cláudio Infante, André Neiva, Reppolho, and Otávio Rocha. It reached 4,000 copies, with the first 1,000 copies containing a version of “Triste” (Tom Jobim) authorized at no cost by Jobim Music.

The second CD from 2010, “Se eu fosse você, prestava mais atenção em mim…”, a very well-recorded CD at Mega and Som Livre Studios where he co-produced with bassist Dunga, reached 7,000 copies and features contributions from musicians like Paulo Calazans, Marcos Suzano, Milton Guedes, Lui Coimbra, Christiaan Oyenes, Vinicius Rosa, and Renato Fonseca.

In the third CD of his career, “Os Maiores Sucessos do Famoso Quem…”, released at the end of 2015, a commemorative CD, brings together songs from his 2 previous albums + 3 new songs. It is available on his website in a production of 3,000 copies where the first 100 people at each show receive the CD as a gift. In this work, his son Raphael Malharo participates and produces a song that generated the Clip “Tentando Recomeçar,” available on YouTube.

He is currently on his third tour in the United States in 2017.

To get an idea of his career online, just watch some clips like: “Bem mais que isso”, “Disseram”, “Benzer”, “Fevereiro pra reinar” and versions like “Escrito nas Estrelas” live at Teatro Rival with Milton Guedes. All this on YouTube.
