Land Demarcation is Already on the Federal Government’s Agenda

The land demarcation policy will undergo some changes and is already on the government’s agenda. The topic was discussed in a meeting between the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Tereza Cristina, and the heads of the Environment, Ricardo Salles; Women, Family and Human Rights, Damares Alves; and the Institutional Security Office, Augusto Heleno.

The government is creating a presidential decree that establishes an inter-ministerial council to address the identification, delimitation, demarcation, and registration of lands traditionally occupied by indigenous peoples. The same council is expected to handle areas where remnants of quilombo communities reside. Previously, this was the responsibility of the National Indian Foundation (Funai), which was linked to the Ministry of Justice.

According to the reorganization of federal executive agencies, the Ministry of Agriculture will be responsible, among other duties, for issues related to agrarian reform, land regularization of rural areas, the Legal Amazon, and indigenous and quilombola lands.
