Discover Palmas, the capital of Tocantins – The Brasilians

Discover Palmas, the capital of Tocantins

Inaugurated on May 20, 1989, and officially established on January 1, 1990, Palmas is nestled in the lush landscape of the Cerrado, in the heart of Brazil. Known as the Capital of Opportunities and anchored in a sustainable development project where the environment and humanity are at the center of study, the city boasts an ecosystem of great scenic beauty with urban parks, gardens, and strategically designed green areas.

The capital of Tocantins is the last planned Brazilian city of the 20th century. It features bold architecture, with wide avenues complemented by comprehensive landscaping and an urban division characterized by large commercial and residential blocks.

A mandatory access route between the North and South regions of the country, major infrastructural projects such as the North-South Railway, the Araguaia-Tocantins waterway, and the BR-153, which will be duplicated, pass through the capital and its surroundings.

The city is conducive to the development of business tourism, events, and ecotourism. Located 805 km from Brasília-DF, it is served by major airlines.

Its beauty, combined with a progressive character, has helped attract Brazilians from all states. These people are the driving force of the city, which is rich in cultural diversity and continually enhances its infrastructure and diversifies its services.

Palmas also stands out for its large number of green public spaces, encouraging the population to occupy them and make outdoor physical exercise a habit. Investments in the establishment of outdoor gyms, construction of bike lanes, and jogging tracks have been fostering a culture of health care and promoting well-being among the population.

The Tocantins capital has hosted major international events, such as the first edition of the World Indigenous Peoples Games, held in October 2015, with the participation of 1,800 athletes from Brazilian ethnic groups and countries like New Zealand, Canada, the Philippines, Russia, among others, with an estimated audience of 140,000 people. Another significant international event held in Palmas was the IronMan 70.3, which has had two editions in the capital, one in 2016 and another in 2017.
