Discover the Charms of the Capital of Piauí: Teresina

Teresina is the only capital in the Northeast that does not have a coastline. The lack of beaches, however, is compensated by other attractions, such as the meeting of the Poty and Parnaíba rivers, the good restaurants serving local cuisine, and great shopping for handicrafts and clothing.

To alleviate the heat that plagues the city year-round, parks and tree-lined squares spread across streets and avenues.

The Environmental Park Meeting of the Rivers has an excellent structure for family outings and children. It offers a beautiful view of the Poty and Parnaíba Rivers. It provides a pleasant contact with nature. It is a bit far from the city, so tourists are better off renting a car as public transport takes a long time. It is one of the city’s postcards, and the most traditional tour in the capital takes you to the meeting of the rivers. Boats depart from the Environmental Park Meeting of the Rivers, located in the Poty Velho neighborhood, which houses a group of ceramic artists. On the return from the tour, check out the beautiful works.

Also visit the New Citizenship Park. A pleasant, tree-filled place, it sells handicrafts and on weekends there are some shows attended by many young people.

The handicraft center is one of the coolest things in Teresina. Located in front of Pedro II Square, the center has several stores selling local handicrafts. Right at the entrance, there is a large sculpture of animals that were found in the region.

It is the ideal place to buy souvenirs from Piauí, from opal necklaces (most commonly found in the Pedro II region) to ceramics from Serra da Capivara (from São Raimundo Nonato). You can purchase everything from inexpensive gifts like keychains to expensive wooden sculptures. Interestingly, the place was used as a military police barracks until 1978, and a basement where political prisoners were tortured has been preserved and can be visited, but it requires a bit of cold courage as it is not only suffocating but also has bloodstains on the walls.

To buy wooden art – a specialty of Piauí’s handicrafts, especially when the theme is religious – stroll around the Handicraft Center in Pedro II Square. Altars, saints, and biblical characters are the most beautiful pieces, as well as the bags and placemats made from buriti wood fibers.

When it’s time to taste the local cuisine, head to the other side of the Poty River. In the neighborhoods of Fátima, Jóquei, and São Cristóvão are some of the best restaurants in the city. To whet your appetite, try tiquira, a cassava spirit.

Among the main dishes, Capote, made with guinea fowl; Arroz Maria Izabel, with chopped dried meat; Paçoca (shredded dried meat with flour pounded in a mortar); and Peixada de Piratinga, made with coconut milk and sweet potatoes are popular. To accompany, go for cajuína, an exotic carbonated cashew juice.
