C. S. Lewis – The Brasilians

Clive Staples Lewis, known as C. S. Lewis, was born in Belfast, Ireland (now Northern Ireland), on November 29, 1898. He was a British writer, professor, and literary critic.

At the age of 15, Clive became an atheist and developed an interest in the occult. Even in his teenage years, C. S. Lewis was fascinated by Norse and Greek mythology as well as Latin and Hebrew. At 18, he was admitted to University College, Oxford, but his studies were interrupted when he was called to serve in World War I (1914-1918). After the war, Clive returned to university and graduated in Classics.

During the war, he met soldier Paddy Moore, with whom he became great friends and made a pact that if one of them died during the conflict, the other would take care of the deceased’s family. Moore died in 1918, and Lewis honored the vow. After the war, he sought out Moore’s mother and sister and formed a close friendship with them, dedicating many years to their support.

Lewis was an atheist for many years, but at the age of 31, he converted to Christianity and became a member of the Anglican Church. In 1933, he published “The Pilgrim’s Regress.”

In 1936, C. S. Lewis published “The Allegory of Love: A Study of Medieval Tradition,” considered one of his most important works, which received the Gollansz Prize from the British Academy in 1937. During World War II, he gained popularity with his lectures broadcast by the BBC in London, being called the “apostle of skeptics.”

His faith profoundly affected his work, with religion being a constant theme in his books. He published: “The Problem of Pain” (1940), “The Screwtape Letters” (1942), “Miracles” (1947), “Mere Christianity” (1952), and the most famous, “The Chronicles of Narnia,” a series of seven novels of fiction and fantasy: “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” “Prince Caspian,” “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,” “The Silver Chair,” “The Horse and His Boy,” “The Magician’s Nephew,” and “The Last Battle.”

“The Chronicles of Narnia” has been translated into over 41 languages and adapted for television and film. In 2005, the first book of the series was turned into a major production by Walt Disney Studios.

C. S. Lewis passed away in Oxford, England, on November 22, 1963.
