Brazil, a Historical Destination According to the USA

Although Brazil is a tourist destination recognized for its vast coastline, the country is home to regions of great historical significance. This is the case of the city of Tiradentes, which, according to the American magazine Departures, is the “most beautiful in Brazil.” Located less than 200 km from the state capital, Belo Horizonte, the charming city attracts visitors who can check out the various attractions and options for tours to suit all tastes. The article presents historical data about the region and highlights the baroque architecture of the city. Furthermore, the magazine suggests that “if you are planning a visit, plan for August, when you can experience the Tiradentes Culture and Gastronomy Festival, which brings together chefs from Brazil and around the world who give cooking classes, present dinners, and restaurants.”

“The history of Brazil is rich, extensive, and full of diversity. Culture is one of the main identifying marks of the country in the world, as pointed out by various surveys conducted abroad by Embratur (Brazilian Institute of Tourism). This recognition from the American outlet is a great opportunity to present to the world a series of tourist products beyond Brazil’s ‘Sun and Beach.’ We, at Embratur, understand the importance and value the cultural tourism segment in diversifying the Brazilian offer in the international market,” emphasizes the president of the Institute, Teté Bezerra.

Founded at the foot of the Serra de São José, the city was just a wealthy mining settlement in the early 18th century. In 1718, it became Vila São José, in honor of the then Portuguese prince D. José I. With the proclamation of the Republic, the municipality was renamed Tiradentes, after the martyr of the Inconfidência Mineira (an attempt at emancipation in Minas Gerais in 1789), who was born in the region and died fighting against the monarchy.

When gold became scarce in the area, the city lost its relevance, only to be rediscovered in the 1970s. Exceptionally preserved due to low activity for many decades, the baroque architectural ensemble of Tiradentes includes gems such as the charming Chafariz de São José, built in 1749 to supply the city with drinking water and still in operation today. Cultural Heritage

In its rich history, Brazil carries archaeological records, ruins, and constructions that impress not only for their beauty but also for their cultural and social importance. The country is home to 14 Brazilian Historical and Cultural Heritage sites recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). With four historical sites, Minas Gerais is the state with the highest number of honors. The UNESCO website provides more details about each of the World Heritage sites in Brazil.Source: www.embratur.gov.br
