To better understand what it is about, it is necessary to know or recall the etymology of each word and how they together can provide us with the most complete answer possible on the subject.
“Bio” has Greek origins meaning life. The word “Region” has Latin origins and basically means an area or territory that has common characteristics, whether they are natural or resulting from human action, such as an economic activity.
Thus, a Biorregion will be defined as an area and/or territory in the geographical space whose borders are delimited by nature or the environment and not by humans.
This concept is part of the well-known philosophy of Biorregionalism, employed mainly in studies of management, planning, and environmental zoning, which seek to respect environmental ethics and promote sustainability in the way these extensive areas spread across the planet are used.
A biorregion has several natural systems or ecosystems whose limits are set by nature itself, as mentioned earlier. Thus, they have their own characteristics that are difficult for researchers to define, as ecological relationships and the geographical space are complex terms to analyze comprehensively, but generally, they are defined by climatic characteristics, types of vegetation, biodiversity and genetics of fauna, and ecological communities.
Another aspect of biorregionalism still seeks to immerse humans in these biorregions, in order to verify among them the conceptions and perceptions that society develops in contact with nature, reducing the impacts caused by different forms of use and occupation, whether individual or collective, thus taking into account cultural manifestations and the history of societies.
