Contrary to what many think, the influence of colors is not based solely on personal preferences or pure favoritism. They are visual waves that directly influence people’s attitudes, behaviors, and sensations; in other words, they are forms of language that can be used to convey messages. It is important to understand their meanings to use them effectively, adapting them according to each situation.
Founded in 1963 by American Lawrence Herbert in New Jersey, New York, Pantone Inc. is the company responsible for the famous Pantone Color Scale. It started as a graphic standards system aimed at design professionals to solve standardization problems, thus enabling the creation of a color standard in the productions of the Film, Textile, and many other industries.
The company gained strength in 2000, becoming a global reference for color control and specification.
In the last 7 years, Pantone has defined the color of the year, which has served as a guide for the areas of decoration, fashion, design, and other sectors of the industry, highlighting the importance of color as a language of communication.
In 2019, the company announced Living Coral as the color of the year, which has already been showing its global influence.
With a vibrant and warm proposal, reminiscent of sunset, the chosen color is capable of conveying warm and optimistic sensations. The orange tone references the 50s and 60s when the color was used in various objects, such as cars and clothing. The vintage association evokes simpler times when people were independent of technology. The choice of Living Coral is not only important for the design sectors but can also be seen as a reflection for today’s society in the quest for humanization amidst so many digital advancements.
The shade has been in the spotlight since the second half of 2018 and has already been used in major awards by artists like Alek Wek at the Venice Film Festival. In addition, it was also a bet by major companies and designers like Marc Jacobs in their collections. Highlighted in the spring/summer 2019 runway, it is a strong bet for the year and will soon reach other sectors of the industry.
