To increase security against fraud and illicit copies of the National Driver’s License (CNH), the National Traffic Department (Denatran) presented the operation of the new QR Code technology. About 300,000 licenses have already been issued with the new model since May 1.
The old model, without a two-dimensional barcode and encrypted data, will be gradually replaced as drivers renew their licenses, which are valid for five years. The new license does not require the replacement of CNHs whose validity period has not expired.
The technology will allow the data of Brazilian drivers to be accessed by reading the QR Code, which will provide access to Denatran’s database, where a digital version of the CNH will be available, containing biographical data and a photo of the document holder.
According to Denatran’s director, Elmer Vicenzi, this security is not limited to traffic documentation. “This implementation will allow society to verify the photo. Any sector of society will have access, whether in a civil relationship or in a business relationship, such as banks, notaries, and car rental companies, for example.”
Reading App
The app responsible for reading the code is called “Lince,” already available for Android and iOS systems. Denatran does not foresee any additional costs for drivers, but since the issuance of the CNH is regulated by the states, it will be up to the federative units to regulate the fee to be charged.
