The 2022 Census shows that Brazil’s population reached 203,062,512 people, an increase of 12.3 million since the last collection, conducted for the 2010 Census. The data was released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The difference of 6.5% means that the average population growth in recent years was 0.52%, the lowest recorded in the country since 1872, when the first census was conducted.Seven cities exceed 100,000 inhabitants after an increase of over 40%Seven Brazilian cities that recorded a population increase of over 40% in the last 12 years surpassed the mark of 100,000 inhabitants. They are: Senador Canedo (GO), Fazenda Rio Grande (PR), Luís Eduardo Magalhães (BA), Sorriso (MT), Camboriú (SC), Nova Serrana (MG), and Sarandi (PR).Population grows more than 10% in Manaus and in the capitals of the MidwestIn the last 12 years, Manaus was the Brazilian capital that recorded the highest percentage of population increase. Its number of residents jumped from 1,802,014 in 2010 to 2,063,547 in 2022, a growth of 14.5%. The numbers also place the Amazonian capital in first place in the ranking of the largest absolute increases: the city welcomed just over a decade an increase of 261,533 new residents.The most relevant data from the Census:• The population grew by 12.3 million people compared to 2010. At that time, there were 190.7 million inhabitants and now there are 203 million; an increase of 6.4%• Regarding households, the increase was much greater: in 2010 there were 67.5 million and now there are 90.6 million, or 34% more: a growth rate five times higher than that of the population• With more households, the average number of residents per household fell: now there are 2.79 on average; 13 years ago, this number was 3.31• In the last 12 years, the population growth rate was 0.52% per year. It is the lowest ever recorded since 1872• São Paulo remains the most populous state with 44 million inhabitants; and Roraima, the least populous, with its 636,000 inhabitants• The Southeast region concentrates the largest number of Brazilian residents (84.8 million inhabitants), with 41.8%, while 8% live in the Midwest• Among the cities, the capital of São Paulo also leads in population, with 11.4 million people• Manaus stands out for being the city that gained the most residents in the last 12 years in absolute numbers, jumping from 1.8 million to 2 million inhabitants• Salvador had the largest population decline, falling from 2.67 million to 2.41 million inhabitants. As a result, the most populous metropolis in the Northeast became Fortaleza, which became the 4th most populous in the country• Roraima had the highest growth rate, which can be partly explained by the unprecedented inclusion of the Yanomami people in the census.Source: Agência Brasil
