Brazil welcomed 2.97 million international tourists in the first five months of 2023. This number is 108% higher than that recorded from January to May last year. According to the Ministry of Tourism, in May alone, more than 292,300 people visited the country, representing a 44.5% increase compared to the same month in 2022.
The majority of international tourists came from Argentina (1.24 million), the United States (271.1 thousand), and Paraguay (215.5 thousand). Together, tourists from these three countries accounted for almost half of all foreigners who visited Brazil. Among the top five are also Chile (197.8 thousand) and Uruguay (184.9 thousand).
The most sought-after destinations in Brazil were Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo.
Regarding the impact of tourism on the economy, the numbers also show growth. In the first five months, foreign tourists spent $2.721 billion (about R$ 13 billion) in the country. This volume is 35.9% higher than that obtained in the same period last year.
