The National Library Foundation (FBN) was created 208 years ago, during the imperial period. To celebrate the date, Brazil commemorates National Book Day on October 29. The institution’s collection, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, the former capital of the country, was brought from Portugal by D. João VI.
Currently, the library is a reference in promoting reading in Brazil. In addition, it has been recognized by UNESCO as one of the ten largest national libraries in the world and the largest in Latin America. Besides works in Portuguese, the institution holds historical documents that reconstruct national memory.
This wealth is not limited to the institution’s environment. Of the nearly 9.2 million items in the National Library, about 2.5 million can be accessed online, reaching a broader audience.
