Lula heads to Canada for G7 summit addressing energy security – The Brasilians

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva departed on the morning of this Monday (16) for Canada, where he will participate on this Tuesday (17) in the 51st G7 Summit, the group of the seven most industrialized nations in the world. The meeting is taking place in the city of Kananaskis, in the province of Alberta.

“At the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, I am departing this morning for Canada. There, I will represent Brazil at the expanded session of the G7 Summit, which takes place tomorrow,” the president said in a post on his social media before boarding.

The theme of energy security is expected to be one of the main focuses of the debates between member countries and invited nations, such as Brazil, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to Ambassador Mauricio Lyrio, Secretary for Climate, Energy, and Environment at Itamaraty, the emphasis will be on technology and innovation, diversification and enabling of critical minerals production chains, and infrastructure and investment.

The diplomat assesses that the meeting will be a chance to advance topics that will be part of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), in Belém, Pará, in November.

“President Lula’s participation will be an opportunity for the president to also speak about the organization of COP-30 and to invite other countries (to the event),” the diplomat said.

The ambassador emphasized that the theme proposed for the event has a direct relation to the issues to be addressed at COP-30.

Expanded Group

Brazil will participate in the expanded session of the summit, along with other invited countries such as South Africa, Australia, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, India, and Mexico. The main summit includes the United States, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and Germany.

President Lula was invited to the event on Wednesday (11) by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

A bilateral meeting between Lula and the host is scheduled for the 17th.
