Jair Bolsonaro remains hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Hospital DF Star, in Brasília (DF), for treatment of bilateral bacterial pneumonia caused by bronchoaspiration. The information was released in a medical bulletin on Monday morning (16). The medical team reported that the former president showed clinical and laboratory improvement over the last 24 hours.
The bulletin points to recovery of renal function and partial reduction of inflammatory markers, indicating a response to antibiotic treatment. Despite the progress in his condition, Bolsonaro remains under intensive care. According to the doctors overseeing his care, he continues to receive clinical support and is undergoing sessions of respiratory and motor physiotherapy while hospitalized in the unit.
The medical document also states that, at this time, there is no predicted discharge from the ICU. The previous bulletin, released on Sunday, had already indicated improvement in renal function but noted a new elevation of inflammatory markers in the blood. In light of this change in his clinical condition, the team decided to broaden the antibiotic coverage.
In the statement, the doctors recorded that the patient “evolved with clinical stability and improvement in renal function, but with a new elevation of inflammatory markers in the blood.”
The bulletin adds that, “due to these changes, there was a need to expand the antibiotic coverage.” The bulletin is signed by doctors Claudio Birolini, Leandro Echenique, and Brasil Caiado, as well as the coordinator of the hospital’s general ICU, Antônio Aurélio de Paiva Fagundes Jr., and the general director of the unit, Allisson B. Barcelos Borges.
Hospitalization after feeling unwell
Bolsonaro was taken to the hospital on Friday morning (13), after feeling unwell during the early hours at the 19th Military Police Battalion in Brasília, known as “Papudinha.” The former president is serving his sentence at the facility, convicted for his role in the coup plot surrounding the 2022 elections. According to medical reports, he arrived at the hospital on oxygen support, with low oxygen saturation, fever, headache, and chills.
According to records from the battalion’s medical team, the former president was fine the night before but experienced an episode of hiccups. According to the reports, he opted to take medication after a game ended and, around 2 a.m., began feeling nauseous and shaky. Care was provided at 6:45 a.m., when staff decided to transfer him for hospital evaluation.
The hospitalization has reignited calls from the family for Bolsonaro to serve his sentence under house arrest. On Saturday (14), Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) said he believes it is appropriate for his father to return home. According to him, “Bolsonaro needs constant monitoring. The medications he takes, combined with the aftermath of the stabbing, demand more than double the care for his health. The right and just course would be for him to go home.”
