The Brazilian government has announced that travelers from the U.S., Canada, and Australia will need to obtain a visa before entering the country, starting April 10, 2025. This measure was initially set to take effect on April 10 of this year but was postponed by Brazilian authorities to allow more time for the implementation of the electronic visa system.
One of the requirements for obtaining a Brazilian visa is to provide proof of income by presenting the last three bank statements or the last six pay stubs, according to the website of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
If you do not have at least $2,000 in your bank account, you will need a sponsor—typically a friend or family member—to sign a document called an affidavit of support, accepting financial responsibility for you.
Other requirements include a passport, a letter of intent, proof of residence, plane or bus tickets, accommodation reservations, and a payment of $80.90.
While this may seem overwhelming, the United States has even stricter requirements for Brazilians who want to obtain a U.S. tourist visa. In addition to paying a much higher application fee—$185—Brazilians need to schedule an interview at the nearest embassy or consulate and, at that time, present several documents proving their ability to cover the entire trip, as well as their intention to return to their home country after the trip.
Once approved, the Brazilian visa will be valid for ten years and will allow a stay of up to 90 days for activities such as tourism and business meetings.
