Hollywood is on Strike – The Brasilians

The union representing over 150,000 television and film actors is on strike, joining the writers who, in May, initiated the first industry-wide work stoppage in Hollywood in 63 years. Why are actors and writers on strike?
Salary is usually the main reason for work stoppages, and this is the case here. The growth of streaming services and the challenges created by the pandemic have brought difficulties to studios, many of which are facing financial hardships, just like actors and writers, who are seeking better pay and new protections.
Both actors and writers are demanding an increase in residual payments (a type of royalty) from streaming services. In television, when a series was a hit, actors and writers could count on a long stream of regular residual checks; but streaming has changed the system. Streaming series typically have far fewer episodes than television series. What is the position of Hollywood studios?
The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, which represents major studios and streamers, stated that it has offered “historic wages and residual increases,” as well as higher caps for pensions and health plans. They also claim that their offer includes audition protections, an “innovative” proposal regarding artificial intelligence, and other benefits that address the union’s concerns.
Hollywood studios have also emphasized that the entire industry shift has not been easy for them either. As viewers have been slow to return to theaters and home viewers have shifted from cable and network television to streaming entertainment, many studios have seen their stock prices plummet and their profit margins shrink. Some companies have resorted to layoffs or canceled projects – or both. What will happen to your TV shows and movies?
It will take a while for viewers to notice a change, as most films scheduled to premiere this year have already been filmed. But viewers are already seeing the effects of the strike, and if it continues, popular shows may have their upcoming seasons delayed.
Late-night shows are already airing reruns due to the writers’ strike, and the vast majority of TV and film productions have already halted or suspended production. High-profile shows like “Yellowjackets,” “Severance,” and “Stranger Things” have stopped work following the start of the writers’ strike; it is still unclear whether the upcoming seasons will be delayed. Disney announced several changes to its theatrical release schedule in June.Source: The New York Times
