Davos Forum: Cooperation in a Fragmented World – The Brasilians

The World Economic Forum began this Monday (16) in Davos, Switzerland, the annual meeting of leaders and government representatives with businesspeople, investors, and other agents of the global economy.

The Forum was created in 1971 as a meeting of European leaders, and only in 2015 was it formally recognized as an international organization. Today it has become a global platform for cooperation between the public and private sectors.

This year’s theme could not be more appropriate: cooperation in a fragmented world. The event is expected to gather 2,700 international leaders from 130 countries. 52 heads of state and government are also expected to attend.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, one of the most anticipated figures, decided not to participate in the meeting this year. The Brazilian government sent ministers Fernando Haddad (Finance) and Marina Silva (Environment and Climate Change) to represent the country.

According to the Ministry of Finance, which did not disclose details about Haddad’s bilateral meeting agenda, the focus of participation is to send a message that Brazil is a central international player in global economic challenges.

In the view of the Brazilian government, Marina Silva’s presence also signals that economic reforms go hand in hand with sustainability goals, which are at the top of current geopolitical concerns. The two Brazilian ministers are expected to participate in a joint activity in Davos.
