Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Wednesday (15) that expands a controversial state program for transporting immigrants to other states.
“Florida is using all available tools to protect our citizens from Biden’s open border policies,” DeSantis wrote on Twitter. “I am pleased to have signed the legislation to continue the program of transporting illegal aliens to sanctuary jurisdictions.”
DeSantis argued that the people his administration transports to sanctuary jurisdictions are “in much better circumstances than being stuck somewhere or having nowhere to go.”
He also emphasized: “I would love not to have to deal with this. But you have a total disaster unfolding at the border for over two years. You have millions and millions of people entering illegally from over 100 different countries. No one knows who these people are. We have no idea what they will do when they get here.”
DeSantis declared a state of emergency regarding the immigration situation in his state. This allows the government to award millions of dollars in no-bid contracts to companies to transport immigrants across the country.
The legislation comes at a time when Florida is experiencing an increase in the number of immigrants, particularly from Cuba and Haiti, trying to reach the state’s coast by boat.
