Forget Florida! Americans Are Now Migrating to Texas

They say everything is bigger in Texas.

And between 2020 and 2023, this seems to have happened with population growth.

Nine of the 10 fastest-growing cities in the U.S. during this period are in the Lone Star State, according to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau on places with populations of 20,000 or more at any point between April 2020 and July 2023.

Celina, Texas, a city about 40 miles north of Dallas, took first place as its population grew by more than 143% between 2020 and 2023. In July 2020, the city had a modest population of just over 17,800 residents. By July 2023, that number increased to over 43,300, according to Census Bureau estimates.

Residents say Celina is incredibly safe, has an excellent healthcare system, and offers a great quality of life, according to a 2022 community engagement survey sponsored by the city.

Fulshear, Texas, located about 30 miles west of Houston, experienced similar growth. Its population more than doubled, from 17,558 in 2020 to 42,616 in 2023.

While the fastest-growing cities are concentrated in Texas, the places where populations decreased the most are spread across eight states, primarily in the South and West regions. California has three, including the notoriously expensive San Francisco.
Why Texas?

The population growth in many Texas cities can be attributed, at least in part, to the relatively lower cost of living in the state compared to many other states, as well as the lack of a state income tax. Texas is also ranked in various rankings among the top states for business.

It’s no wonder that Elon Musk recently announced the relocation of his companies from California to Texas.

As a result, the state’s population has been growing steadily and faster than almost any other state since 2000, according to the Census Bureau.

Some say that population growth may also be a consequence of illegal immigration due to the state’s position, which has a large border with Mexico. The Census Bureau report states otherwise. Although the influx of immigrants into the state is significant, many do not stay there. The arrival of domestic migrants was greater than that of international immigrants, according to the agency.
