The body of Juliana Marins was retrieved on Wednesday (25) from the crater of Mount Rinjani by Indonesian rescue teams. The information was confirmed by the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) in an interview with a local TV station and also confirmed by the young woman’s family.
According to the agency, the rescue took more than seven hours of work.
Part of the journey, which involved hoisting the body and carrying it on a stretcher to a base, was filmed by a mountaineer who helped with the rescue.
The Brazilian fell from a cliff surrounding the trail leading to the volcano’s summit on Saturday (21) and was about 650 meters below the point from where she fell. Since then, she had been without water, food, and warm clothing, and the rescue was prevented by weather conditions.
Juliana was 26 years old, from Niterói, and had been traveling through Southeast Asia since February. According to reports from tourists who spotted Juliana using a drone, she was debilitated and unable to move.
Due to various weather conditions, complicated terrain, and logistical problems in the rescue operations, Juliana was not rescued in time.
It was only on Tuesday (24) that a rescuer managed to reach her, but the Brazilian had already died.
Tribute
Juliana’s father, Manoel Marins, paid tribute to his daughter on his social media.
“At the beginning of this year [she] told us she would do this backpacking trip now while she was young and we supported her. When I asked if you wanted us to give you some money to help with the trip, you told us: never. And so you traveled with your own resources that you earned from your work. And how happy you were realizing this dream. And how happy we were with your happiness. You left doing what you loved most and that comforts our hearts a little,” he concluded.
