The First Lady, Michelle Bolsonaro, participated in a campaign to combat suicide and self-harm among people with disabilities promoted by the Ministry of Women, Family and Human Rights. The Ministry released a video of the
campaign on its social media.
“It’s not easy to be different; it’s an obstacle overcome every day. And without the support of family and friends, or even without an easily noticeable reason, many end up carrying such deep anguish that it can lead them down a path that most cannot understand,” said Michelle Bolsonaro.
She also emphasized that people with disabilities, just like the Brazilian population in general, are susceptible to negative thoughts that can lead someone to think about harming themselves or even taking their own life.
“Be attentive to the signs and guide that person you care about to seek help. Take them to see mental health professionals, and if the situation is critical, call emergency medical services immediately.” She added, “Do not judge, do not hurt, as that will not solve anything. Get involved, love, embrace. Welcome life,” she warned.
Campaign for Life
The ministry launched the campaign “Welcome Life” in April of this year. The initiative aims to prevent suicides and self-harm across all age groups, especially children, adolescents, and young people. The action has the consultancy of psychologist Carlos Aragão, a specialist in Suicide Prevention and a doctoral candidate at the University of Brasília (UnB), and André Salles, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at the University Hospital of Brasília (HUB).
The audiovisual productions also integrated the actions of September Yellow for suicide prevention.
