Carnival 2024: Less Traditional Destinations in Brazil See Higher Demand

This year’s Carnival in Brazil is expected to generate R$ 9 billion — a 10% increase compared to last year, according to Agência Brasil. Considering the recovery observed for the fourth consecutive year, it is the first time that revenue is expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels.

The president of CNC, Roberto Tadros, noted that tourism numbers indicate that activity has improved both nationally and regionally in recent years. “The effect of Carnival as a standalone event significantly contributes to the overall economic recovery,” he highlighted in his statement.

Although less traditional destinations in Brazil, such as Minas Gerais (20.2%), Paraná (14.5%), and Rio Grande do Sul (12.2%), lead the growth projections among the states.

The professionalization of tourism in recent years, combined with the increased demand for these services, explains the rise of less traditional destinations for tourists looking to enjoy this period not just for the large Carnival parties.
Hotels in Rio Expected to Reach 87% Occupancy

But Rio de Janeiro remains the number one destination during Carnival.

A survey released on Friday (January 19) by the Visit Rio Convention Bureau estimates an average hotel occupancy rate of 87% during the Carnival period, from February 9 to Ash Wednesday, on February 14.

Internationally known for its samba school parades and street parties, this year’s Carnival in Rio will feature more than 50 private events, offering a wide range of activities for all types of revelers. Among these private parties is the traditional Copacabana Palace Ball. The 2024 edition of the event has been named Extravangarde, inspired by the major avant-garde artistic movements of the 20th century.

The city has already been celebrating ahead of the official start. Since the beginning of January, samba schools have been holding open rehearsals for the public. On January 13, official parades took to the streets. On February 3, the Sunday before Carnival, the Rio Arena expects to welcome 15,000 people for the Bloco da Preta, led by the daughter of singer and songwriter Gilberto Gil, singer Preta Gil.
