Brazil Sends More Students to the United States

According to the data from the 2019 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange, released by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, Brazil is the 9th largest country in the world to send students to the United States, with an increase of 9.8%, the second largest percentage increase of international students from any country in the world between the academic years ending in 2018 and 2019. The number of U.S. students in Brazil increased dramatically by 29.9%, to 2,699, from 2017 to 2018.

William Popp highlighted the importance of international study for the U.S. Mission in Brazil – “Educational exchange between Brazil and the United States is a top priority for us. We are very pleased to see the increase of Brazilians choosing the United States as their preferred study destination and look forward to continued growth in our educational exchanges. Strong partnerships between American and Brazilian institutions, such as EducationUSA, Fulbright, CAPES, and others, have helped make this increase possible.”

The Open Doors numbers in Brazil are bolstered by an increase in the number of EducationUSA advising centers, now totaling 41 centers across Brazil, the largest EducationUSA network in the world. The number of dual high school diplomas in Brazilian high schools partnered with American schools, where students receive high school diplomas from both Brazil and the United States in major cities across the country, is also on the rise. This new trend is already contributing to an increase in the number of Brazilian students applying to undergraduate programs in the U.S., 5.6%. New pathway programs are also coming to Brazilian schools in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades, where students will graduate with U.S. higher education credits.
