Brasília Celebrates 57 Years

Brasília was pre-conceived and planned with an architectural design in the shape of an airplane, which sets it apart from everything you’ve ever seen. On the 21st of this month, Brasília turns 57 years old. More than just beautiful, the capital of Brazil is an essential stop on any tourist itinerary. The Center of PowerUpon arriving at the Praça dos Três Poderes, you will understand how the country functions. The local Constitution establishes that the Three Powers (Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary) are independent and harmonious with each other. You can visit the headquarters of each of them.Nearby, you will find one of the most magnificent pearls of local architecture: the Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady Aparecida. It is composed of 16 concrete columns that support unique and beautiful stained glass windows. The view from inside can be even more impressive. The altar was donated by Pope John Paul II, and the Stations of the Cross are signed by the famous modernist painter Di Cavalcanti. Without a doubt, it is one of the most culturally enriching visits in the capital.Another must-see attraction, the National Museum Honestino Guimarães is very easy to locate: it is close to the bus station, and its dome-shaped architecture catches the eye. Thanks to this space, Brasília entered the international art circuit. At night, a great choice is Asa Norte, where there are bars for all audiences. Blocks 408 and 409 are famous for housing some of them and tend to be crowded due to the good food, interesting cocktails, and varied music. The Highest Point of BrasíliaDona Sarah Kubitschek City Park is the largest and most famous outdoor leisure center. There you will find 4.2 km of green area with sports courts, cycling and walking paths, an amusement park, an equestrian center, and even a go-kart track. There, near the park, on the Monumental Axis, is the JK Memorial, a museum dedicated to former president Juscelino Kubitschek, the founder of Brasília. The tribute to Juscelino Kubitschek is more than deserved, as he moved the capital and the seat of government from the coast to the central region of the country. Outside the museum, there are works by Brazilian painter and sculptor Athos Bulcão. Inside, part of JK’s legacy is preserved, along with his remains. In the heart of Brasília, you will find the TV Tower. It is worth visiting the observatory, which is 75 meters off the ground. From there, the view of Brasília’s architecture is complete. Take the elevator up and see the Esplanade of the Ministries, the North and South Hotel Sectors, the National Stadium of Brasília, the Nelson Piquet Autodrome, Lake Paranoá, and even other administrative regions.End the day with a beer at Pontão do Lago Sul. Pontão is near the Honestino Guimarães Bridge. This place has several options for bars and restaurants.Source: Embratur, visitbrasil.com
