Brazil Breaks Record for International Tourists and Establishes Itself as One of the Main Destinations in South America

Brazil breaks the record for international tourists in the country, with a total of over 6.621 million travelers. This number surpasses the historic mark of 2018. Thus, Brazil is getting closer to the goals of the National Tourism Plan (PNT), which aims to reach 8.1 million international tourists in the next three years.

“We welcomed 6.621 million foreign passengers on Brazilian soil, and this is a reason to celebrate. It is worth remembering that the historical series dates back to 1970, and the last record was in 2018. And of course, we must attribute all of this to the improvement of infrastructure and our presence at international fairs, attracting foreign investments to Brazil,” commented the Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Ana Carla Lopes.

The Brazilian performance reinforces the maturity of national tourism in attracting international visitors, as pointed out by the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino.

“The year 2024 will go down in history for our tourism as a year of records. The sector has shown all its capacity and strength to welcome these tourists who chose our destinations throughout the year, and with the support of the Federal Government, we have been betting on a work of cultural appreciation and international promotion of our image abroad,” he emphasized.

The result surpasses important years in welcoming these tourists, such as 2014, when the country hosted the FIFA World Cup, and 2016, the year of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. Together, the two years account for 12.9 million arrivals in the country.

In December 2023, the first Office of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in the Americas and the Caribbean was inaugurated in Rio de Janeiro. The result of intense lobbying by the Brazilian government, the unit will definitively place the country on the stage of major global players in the sector, with planning and the adoption of actions for the sustainable development of the entire region.

Additionally, MTur, in partnership with Embratur, has once again marked its presence at major and strategic international events promoting Brazilian destinations. The action involves the promotion of the “Brand Brazil,” now duly committed to sustainability, diversity, and inclusion in the tourism sector.

Brazil also launched the brand “Visit South America: one place, many worlds.” The strategy is a partnership of the Brazilian government with Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chile to seek, in an integrated manner, to promote and position the destinations of these countries internationally, focusing on natural, gastronomic, and hospitality attractions.

For 2025, the Federal Government announced that the new regionalized calls for the International Tourism Acceleration Program (PATI) are expected to have R$ 63.6 million in investments to attract new flights on domestic routes. The expectation is that at least 500,000 new seats will be generated within a year.
