At 81, Erasmo Carlos, symbol of Jovem Guarda, passes away – The Brasilians

Singer and songwriter Erasmo Carlos, 81, died this Tuesday, November 22, due to complications from an edematous syndrome (when there is excess fluid in the body’s tissues), reported the singer’s son Gil Eduardo Esteves. He was hospitalized at Hospital Barra D’Or in Rio de Janeiro.

One of the main figures of the Jovem Guarda movement, alongside Roberto Carlos and Wanderléa, in the 1960s, Erasmo Carlos was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1941. In the late 1950s, he joined the group The Boys of Rock, which later changed its name to The Snakes.

In 1962, Erasmo had his first composition, “Eu Quero Twist,” a partnership with Carlos Imperial, recorded by Agnaldo Rayol. Still in the early 1960s, he had a brief stint with the group Renato e seus Blue Caps, with whom he recorded the band’s second LP.

In 1964, he began his solo career, recording the single “Terror dos Namorados” and the song “Festa de Arromba,” one of his first major hits, both made in partnership with Roberto Carlos. Still with Roberto, he recorded “Quero que Tudo Vá pro Inferno.”

In 1965, he began hosting, alongside Roberto Carlos and Wanderléa, the musical program “Jovem Guarda” on TV Record. In the same year, he released his first LP, “A Pescaria.”

He also acted in films such as “Roberto Carlos e o Diamante Cor-de-Rosa” (1969), “A 300 Quilômetros por Hora” (1970), both directed by Roberto Farias, and “Os Machões” (1971), directed by Reginaldo Faria.

Throughout his long career, he recorded his own songs, many in partnership with Roberto Carlos, and compositions by musicians such as Caetano Veloso, Ary Barroso, Taiguara, Belchior, and Gilberto Gil. He also released several albums such as “Erasmo Carlos e os Tremendões” (1970), “Carlos, Erasmo” (1971), “Erasmo Carlos Convida” (1980), “Mulher” (1981), “Amar pra Viver ou Morrer de Amor” (1982), “Apesar do Tempo Claro” (1988), “Para Falar de Amor” (2001), “Santa Música” (2004), and “Rock and Roll” (2009).

In a post on Instagram, just four days ago, the singer celebrated the Latin Grammy he received for the album “O futuro pertence à… Jovem Guarda” in the category of Rock or Alternative Music Album in Portuguese.

“It is so important to understand the concept when listening to the music… There are various forms of love, and I need them all. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this victory; this Grammy is the recognition of our work. The future belongs to Jovem Guarda!” he commented. In the post, musicians, artists, and friends paid tribute and mourned the singer’s death.
