The 38 neighborhoods were chosen by local experts and city editors based on criteria such as food, drink, arts, and culture. Other evaluated factors included walkability, street life, community, and a “unique local flavor” to select the shortlist of trending locations.

There’s a cool neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro

In 9th place comes Glória, a traditional neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro.

Today, this area is experiencing a resurgence as entrepreneurs discover the characteristics of this neighborhood advantageous for their needs. The 19th-century houses are appealing, and its proximity to the center and Copacabana makes it ideal.

Main attractions

• Church of Our Lady of Glory

The Church of Our Lady of Glory is located on the hill of Glória and overlooks Flamengo Park. It was built between 1735 and 1791 and features a polygonal structure with a single tower. The interiors of the church showcase authentic Brazilian tiles with a blue background. It is said that the wooden sculptures of the main altar were carved by Master Valentim. Considered a gem of architecture, the Church of Our Lady of Glory is one of the main religious assets of Brazilian colonial architecture.

A pioneering work considered at the time (1739). Because of the location where it was built, a strategic point taken from the French by the city’s founder, Estácio de Sá, the church holds significant importance for the Cariocas. The church is located at Praça Nossa Senhora da Glória, 135.

• Marina da Glória

Marina da Glória is next to Santos Dumont airport. Boats of all sizes and shapes can dock here. There are many repair facilities. Nautical equipment stores, boat sales, and sailing schools are located around the marina. The marina hosts the largest boat fair in Latin America and attracts visitors from all over the world.

• Museum of the Republic

The Museum of the Republic was formerly owned by a coffee baron, the Baron of Nova Friburgo. It was built between 1858 and 1866. In 1887, it was converted into a presidential residence until the capital was transferred to Brasília. The museum displays artifacts related to the Republic of Brazil and also houses a cinema and hosts dance and theater programs.

The building itself, known as the Palácio do Catete, is quite spectacular and is situated amidst beautiful expansive gardens that stretch from Rua do Catete to Flamengo Park.
